The original 'rainbow' design was my very first Maya Kern skirt, and since then I've bought it in the mini variant and this 'redo' rerelease with the colors of the rainbow rearranged. It's so easy to match with outfits to display a little quiet Pride or simply to add a splash of color to complement shoes/tops/accessories, so the design has ended up in regular rotation in my wardrobe in all of its myriad forms.
When I first bought the original I was too shy to wear it for a year after buying it because it was shorter than my usual maxi shirts (by a few inches - which is actually ideal, because I have very short legs) but eventually I plucked up the courage and went outside with my ankles on show. And nothing bad happened. In fact, having the skirt as a midi meant that I didn't trip over the hem any more, and it was comfortable in varied weather conditions. It's no exaggeration to say that one of these skirts genuinely made me rethink my entire approach to dressing myself despite being well into middle age.
(I have since discovered that colored tights now exist for plus-sized people which completely fixes my anxiety, and gives me another way to add even more color to my outfits!)
Furthermore, the skirt was actually comfortable! My butt is several sizes larger than my waist but the stretchy elastic and generous dimensions of Maya Kern skirts mean that I can put them on over my legs/hips and still have a close-fitting skirt which stays in place at my waist, with zero pinching, tightness or slipping throughout the day. I don't have to worry about menstrual bloating making the skirt's fit change, or scratchy, unyielding fabric triggering my textural sensitivities; the simple design, gentle fabric and stretchy waistband mean that my comfort is always prioritized.
Maya Kern skirts have become staples of my outfits because I can't be bothered to deal with pocketless, uncomfortable clothing any more. I honestly don't know why I tolerated clothes which didn't accommodate me properly in the past.
Anyway, since buying this 'redo' version in a smaller size than my much-loved original rainbow due to weight fluctuations, I went to a convention and a kid loved the skirt so much that they wanted to take a picture of themselves standing next to it! Then at the same event, I had to carry a bunch of lunch wraps back to my friends without a tray... no problem! Everyone appreciated my magic trick of unpacking an implausible amount of tasty food from my skirt's enormous pockets.
Practical, comfortable, beautiful and capable of delighting small children. If you want to treat yourself to your first genuinely amazing skirt, buy this one. But be warned - you'll soon end up wanting to wear nothing else!
